Biodiversity and Ecological Studies in Forest Ecosystems

India is a mega diversity country with two of the 34 global biodiversity hotspots. Our biotic resources are under increasing pressure due to overexploitation of plant and animal resources, changing land use, habitat loss and fragmentation, pollution of soil, water and air and concerns on emission of greenhouse gases. The natural ecosystems are facing severe degradation leading to the disappearance of many life forms. Species loss has tremendous implications on the ecosystem functioning and ultimately to the survival of mankind in this universe. This is where conservation of biodiversity is important.

Biology, Ecology and Control of Insect Pests of Forest Plantations, Nurseries and Stored Commodities

In natural stands and in plantations, a variety of insects may be associated with a given tree species. A general pest survey must be carried out for identifying the insects associated with specific tree species and their pest status. Based on an assessment of infestation intensity, potential pests are identified for undertaking appropriate management strategies.

Butterfly Gardening

Butterfly gardening is a conservation cum educational programme. Butterfly gardens can be set up in any location by introducing butterfly host plants and by recreating suitable habitats. Generally gardens that are close to natural forests or natural vegetations will attract more number of species compared to urban areas. By establishing butterfly gardens, it is possible to gain insight into the life history, behaviour and role of butterflies in sustaining natural ecosystems.
